Overnight in Chicago

A short visit downtown Chicago

I have recently discovered some websites and groups about critical thinking. Jeff and I have both become fans of this logical and scientific way of looking at our world.

In doing so I came across a local chapter of The Center for Inquiry. We saw this as an opportunity to get together with like minded individuals. It just so happens they get together for social interactions. The only problem is they meet downtown Chicago. That means an 1 hour drive in from Naperville. For us to want to do that we decided to spend the night and enjoy being downtown.

Originally we planned on rollerblading along the lake but 15 minutes from the house I realized I had forgotten my blades. Oh well we didn't want to go back, plus Jeff had hurt his foot and we were not confident he would be able to rollerblade anyway (turns out he could have, but walking was fun too)

We stayed one night at the River Hotel on Wacker Dr along the Chicago River. It was conveniently located near everything we wanted to do. The hotel is directly across the river from the Trump International Hotel and Tower. We didn't go check it out but you can bet it's quite "fancy schmancy".

I do remember grabbing my pocket camera but somehow it did'nt end up on the trip with us. My Blackberry phone provided the pictures from our trip.

The next morning we walked over to Navy Pier. We had lunch there and then went to The Chicago Art Institute. Something I have never done after living here for 20 plus years. It was more fascinating than I expected it to be. I was mainly interested in what the pictures were about like showing society as it was in years gone by. We only allowed 2 1/2 hours before they closed. Definitely not enough time, I will go back again.

I never saw a list of rules while in the museum (didn't look very hard and they were not posted in obvious places) but we did find out about a few: Don't get to close or an alarm will sound, no flash photography, and don't lean on Buddha (I realized it as soon as I did it but it was to late, a security guard yelled at me)

Morton's Steakhouse was the dinner stop. We don't eat like that often but it's sure nice when it comes around.

Short trip but a lot of fun.
